March 2009 UPDATES
The good news is that there are no specific deadlines for March but don't forget to pay your PAYE by 19th March.
Topic of the month -Software
The topic for this month is software and how to choose the right accounting software. At the moment you may keep your accounts manually or you may just be starting up in business and trying to decide which software will suit you best.
What to consider:
Which of the following do you need?
Payroll, Invoicing, stock control, management reporting, credit control, VAT
Cost
The prices of software vary greatly and this will obviously influence your decision.
Ease of use
Do you want to use the software easily or will you rely on a professional to use the software for you. For some very simple cash based businesses inputting all the figures onto a spreadsheet can be sufficient and there is no point in making your accounts over complicated if they don't need to be however as your business grows you may find that excel isn't enough.
Traditional Software
The most well know of these is probably SAGE and is a package that works well for many businesses however most business owners would require some formal training in order to understand it properly. Most accountancy practices will use SAGE. www.sage.co.uk
There are other software available on the market such as Quickbooks, Simply Books and IRIS and it is important that you choose the one that suits your business.
Online Software
Online Software is becoming increasingly popular as this gives the added advantages that your books can be done remotely and that you can have a number of users who can log on from anywhere to do your books. These can often work out very cost effective for businesses without having a large outlay initially to buy the software. Solutions Bookkeeping works closely with Liquid Accounts www.liquidaccounts.net
